When I was in high school, Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm was just getting under way.  My father was a Major General in the US Air Force, and I had grown up knowing there were brave men and women standing up for the rights of others all around the world.  As part of a homeroom project, my class wrote letters to "Dear Solider", and mine was given to a young man who had been wounded in battle.  For several months we exchanged letters and packages, and as a young girl my eyes were opened to a whole different side of life in the military.

Since that time, I have been extremely proud of friends and loved ones who have served in the Armed Forces -- both at home and abroad -- along with others who have volunteered both domestically and internationally.  These heroic people are true inspirations to me and to many.

Please consider writing a letter to those who are far from home.  Handwritten letters and cards mean so much in this new era of technology, Facebook, and eEverything.  Do you have a couple extra Christmas cards sitting around?  -- why not send one to a soldier?  Trying to come up with a great service project for you and your kids?  -- why not make painted pictures or cards for a wounded serviceman.  Looking for a great use for your sticker collection?  -- why not decorate some stationary and write a couple notes to a few airmen or seamen who have been away for quite some time?  About to bake cookies and feel like sending a care package? -- I bet any Marine would love to receive them.

Interesting in making some donations, but not sure how?  --There are also numerous ways to send supplies, books, DVDs, toys, and other needed items to troops and their surrounding communities.

Thank you...and happy writing!
